Priortothe widespread adoption of Christianity in the early twentiethcentury,magic formed an important element of Batak religious practice.Religiousspecialists, known as datu, performed both benign and (http://maplered.com) malevolent magicusing a variety of ritual paraphernalia. The mostsacred and (http://maplered.com) powerful ofthe datu's objects was the potion container, orguri guri. Thesecontainers held pupuk, a powerful substance made froma rituallyexecuted human victim. Pupuk, it was believed, could forcethe victim'sspirit to do the datu's bidding.
